Postcards from the edge

This project utilized photographs of the periphery of Tijuana dating from the 1990s, all from the artist’s personal archive. ERRE showed images to an assortment of people from the community —both friends and strangers— whom he asked to write a letter to someone—family, friend, lover—using the photograph as a visual prompt. Many of the texts express emotions and observations tied to Tijuana’s geographic location and sociopolitical conditions; others are eager communications with family. ERRE created the look of postcards by digitizing the texts, along with a stamp and postal seal and combining them with the photographs. Together the works form an alternate representation of the city and its particular culture and architecture, mapping its inhabitants’ relationship to the city and to each other.
