Prejudice project

ERRE installed this panoramic image of Tijuana and the border wall on a billboard visible from interstate highway 5 in San Ysidro, California. In the foreground a U.S. citizen wearing a camouflage-printed shirt is seen from behind as he looks toward the border. “Don’t be a man for just a minute, be a man for your whole life” was printed across the top of the image. The work references the Minuteman Project, a group of vigilantes who discourage and block the passage of undocumented migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border since 2005. The billboard suggests two readings: the first, as a criticism of that group; and the second as an invitation to the minutemen to serve their country permanently. The viewer’s interpretation depends on personal perspectives.
